Water Efficient Landscape Learning

The WaterWELL Professional Series is a training program for landscape managers and professionals. This series offers a practical approach to the maintenance and management of irrigation systems. Attendees learn practical skills through hands-on sessions and case studies, which can be applied to their everyday work. Classes are available in English and Spanish. GMC is proudly certifying its classes through the Irrigation Association to offer attendees CEUs.

Classes for Professionals

Irrigation Basics

This workshop will provide participants with the knowledge and confidence to fix common sprinkler problems and conduct basic system upgrades. Participants will evaluate the components and the layout of an irrigation system for efficiency. The workshop will also cover new water-efficient irrigation technologies that are recommended for new installations or during retrofitting. The workshop also incorporates practice sessions where participants examine and work with various types of sprinklers and irrigation components.

Irrigation Valve Troubleshooting

This workshop is designed to help participants troubleshoot common electrical and mechanical problems found in an irrigation system. Attendees will learn about common issues and strategize on how to resolve each problem. Irrigation Basics workshop is a great preparation for this course. This workshop also incorporates practice sessions where participants examine various mock electrical faults and work with various types of irrigation valves.

Irrigation Scheduling & Controller Concepts

This workshop covers the basic factors for landscape irrigation scheduling and how to create a schedule based on these details. Participants will evaluate some of the more popular weather-based/ETo controllers on the market and discuss the pros and cons of each type of unit. This workshop will also cover basic programming concepts that apply to most controllers, which will help them better understand their use.

Fertilizer Materials & Applications

This workshop is designed to demonstrate to landscape professionals the importance of selecting appropriate fertilizers for their sites, application methods, safety and plant nutrient needs. This class will also cover soil fertility and plant growth, commercial fertilizers and application techniques. Attendees will learn about the necessary elements for plant growth and the relationship between soil and water to plant fertility. This workshop will discuss the different methods of applying fertilizers by using different types of fertilizer spreaders.

Horticultural Practices

This workshop covers horticulture fundamentals. It will provide the participants with an understanding of theory and practical information they can use in landscape management. The workshop will present basic horticulture principles to help participants become familiar with basic characteristics of plants and the environment they live in. The workshop will cover the classification, anatomy, nomenclature and physiology of plants. These processes explain how plants respond to their environment, survive in the landscape and are maintained.

Tailgate Training Sessions

Tailgate Sessions consists of an instructor and mobile training station going to the site of the attendees (typically landscape companies). The session is conducted outdoors and on the company's site, therefore the attendees don't have to travel. The instructor arrives at the site with a truck full of irrigation-related components. The session includes, water-efficient irrigation equipment, how to repair and adjust an irrigation system, water-saving techniques in the field and a discussion on water scheduling and smart controllers.
